May 21, 2024 Primary Election

Oregon Primary Elections

The major political parties in Oregon hold closed primary elections to determine their nominee for the General Election in November. Oregon law allows major political parties to decide whether to hold open or closed primary elections 90 days before the Primary Election.

In a closed primary, only voters who are registered members of a party can vote for the candidates in that party’s primary. For example, registered Democrats will receive a ballot with Democratic candidates and registered Republicans will receive Republican candidates; this is for all partisan offices, like Governor, US Senator, State Representative and President.  These ballots also contain all of the nonpartisan races.  Voters registered with a minor party or as nonaffiliated will receive a ballot with only nonpartisan races.

There are two major political parties and several minor political parties in Oregon. You can choose to be a member of a party, or you can choose to not be a member of a party (nonaffiliated).  April 30, 2024 is the last day to register to vote or change party affiliation for the May 21, 2024 Primary Election.
