Summer Reading Program 2017

Build a Better World™

WHAT IT IS
The Summer Reading Program is Crook County Library's flagship literacy program for all ages. From June 1 to August 1, we will be bringing free events, free books, and more to Prineville and the greater Crook County community.

HOW YOU DO IT
Registration for the 2017 Summer Reading Program will open at midnight on Thursday, June 1 and will close at 11:59 PM on Friday, June 30. Registered participants will receive a reading log; children and teens will also receive a free book just for signing up!

Every day you read (or are read to) for 15 minutes or more, color in one of the windows on the reading log. Audiobooks, e-books, comics, blogs, unusually long-winded cereal boxes - all of it counts.

Participants who read 15 minutes a day for at least 32 days will receive prizes and will be entered for a chance to win a Grand Prize. Participants who read for 44 or 56 days will get additional Grand Prize drawing tickets.

We will also be holding free events for children, teens, and adults all the way through June and July. You do not have to register for the reading log portion of the Summer Reading Program to attend events (but it wouldn't hurt). We will be releasing a complete schedule of events soon, so stay tuned!

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
The Summer Reading Program encourages Crook County residents of all ages to read for pleasure and to use library resources during the summer. For children and teens, a casual, regular reading habit is critical for maintaining and building literacy skills, especially when school is not in session. Kids also benefit from seeing the adults in their lives reading for fun!

HOW YOU CAN HELP
This year's Summer Reading theme is Build a Better World, and in that spirit we would like to give individuals and organizations the chance to help us make this wonderful program a success:

  1. Donations: To add to the fun and to create a sense of challenge that will keep kids, adults, and teens reading all summer long, we'd like to offer incentives and contest prizes at various times during the program. Because of our limited budget, we cannot afford to offer this without the help of our community. We are accepting donations of cash and gift cards through Monday, May 1st. All sponsors, big or small, will be thanked in our print publicity and will receive a nifty Certificate of Esteem.
  2. Volunteers: We need volunteers to help register participants and to help out at our kickoff and finale parties. Volunteers must be 14 or older and must pass a background check. Please visit our Support Your Library page for more information.
  3. Program participants: We are looking for organizations to host activity stations at our Kickoff Picnic on Saturday, June 3 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. Last year, Crook County Parks and Rec hosted carnival-style games and the Health Dep't demonstrated bike safety and maintenance. Past years have included Crook County Fire and Rescue, Band of Brothers, and other community organizations. Please contact us by Friday, May 12 if you would like to be a part of the kickoff picnic.
