What It Is

The Summer Reading Program is Crook County Library's flagship literacy program for all ages. From June 13 to August 7 - or as we're calling it, "56 Days of Peace, Love, and Reading - the library will bring free events, free books, and more to Prineville and the greater Crook County community. This year's theme, "Libraries Rock," is a celebration of music and geology as well as a super fun reminder that libraries shred.

In addition to being totally gnarly, the Summer Reading Program encourages Crook County residents of all ages to read for pleasure and to use library resources during the summer. For children and teens, a casual, regular reading habit is critical for maintaining and building literacy skills, especially when school is not in session. Kids also benefit from seeing the adults in their lives reading for fun!

How to Be a Summer Reader

Online registration for the 2018 Summer Reading Program will open at midnight on Wednesday, June 13 and will close at midnight on Sunday, July 7. Depending on your age/the age of the person you are registering for, you will register for either the Youth, Teen, or Adult program (don't worry, the signup website will lead you to the correct program!). Once you're signed up, you'll get a link to a printable reading log. If you don't have a printer at home, you can come to the library and pick up a copy of the log. If you're a kid or a teen, you'll also get a free book just for signing up!

This year, all three reading logs are formatted like Bingo cards, with each square representing one challenge. Some of the challenges are reading-based, while others are experienced-based; there's more than one way to get your brain and body moving, after all! Make sure you check out the back of your reading log for instructions on how to fill it out - there's more to it than just completing rows.

Starting on Monday, July 16, you can bring your completed reading logs to the library for a chance to win Grand Prizes, prize books, and more fun stuff!

Events, Concerts, Programs, and Other Fun Stuff

There's more to Summer Reading than just the log! Starting with our Kickoff Block Party on Saturday, June 16, we'll be having totally awesome events every week for people of all ages. From storytimes to robotics classes, nature walks to classic movies, there's something for everyone!

You do not have to be registered for the reading log portion of the Summer Reading Program to attend events. All events are 100% FREE and open to all!
